A berber has loops and so it looks quite different than a plush which has hairs sticking straight up.
Also a berber feels harder on the feet.
Of course a commercial berber carpet will tend to last longer.
There are some drawbacks to keep in mind though.
If you or people have dogs or cats,they can damage berber carpet very easily by their teeth or by their claws.
When a thread in berber starts pulling, it can pull for a long way.
And so animals can do a lot more damage to berber than they can to other types of carpets.
Seams tend to come apart easier in berbers.
Partly because carpet installers do not seal the edges of the carpet.
And so the berbers will easily have a thread pulled along that seam.
I can fix berber pulls, dog chews etc but why set yourself up to pay more money for maintenance than necessary.
Plush carpets and nylon looped ones seam up a lot easier than berbers.
There are a lot more colors available in plush carpets also.
Generally speaking, the more you pay, the better the carpet.
The carpets can be made of different fibers also and the different fibers have different pros and cons.
It wears better than 10 or 15 years ago though.
Nylon carpets tend to wear better but they also tend to stain more also.
The companies do have more stain resistant products that they put on the nylons that make them better for resisting stains.
If you add a stain resistant product later,they tend to be very toxic.
Another thing to keep in mind when you buy new carpet is to buy a good heavy dense pad.
Seems like i installed for eternity.
Then i sold carpet, installed and repaired.
After that i sold, repaired and hired a carpet layer to install.
Both are difficult in their own way.
But by challenging myself and a lot of practice, i have done a lot of different kind of repairs.
And so ,if you want a great looking job, hire a person who does the repairing and restretching for a living.
Also there are a lot of carpet repair kits out there.
I have never looked at one.
But when i go into a home it requires me falling back on a lot of my experience and skill to do the job right.
